The payoffs of thinking ahead are for the long term. For example, between a knight and a bishop, the latter can move more squares across the board. Nonetheless, if the player thinks that the Knight will be far more important than the Bishop in achieving the desired result he|she can sacrifice the Bishop for the Knight.
