Casablanca; A Film Classic For All Times

The 1940′s was a big decade for movies. One of the best and most popular movies to be released came out in 1942. Casablanca is considered one of the greatest stories of love, betrayal and redemption. Filmed in black and white, the movie is both exciting and beautiful, a must see for any classic movie fan.

Directed by Michael Curtiz, this feature film is a great action drama film. The stars of the film, Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman have an exciting chemistry on-screen. Paired together with supporting cast Paul Henreid, Claude Rains and Peter Lorre, the duo invites you into their little world of love, deception and redemption.

This captivating movie is set during World War II. A tragic and beautiful story about a man struggling with himself between love and virtue. Ilsa, played by Ingrid Bergman, is the ex-lover of Rick, played by Humphrey Bogart. Ilsa is trying to escape Morocco with her husband, Victor and Rick has the means for their escape. But will his pain and longing for Ilsa keep him from letting her go?

The Nazi’s who are stationed in Casablanca, Morocco know that Victor is the leader of the Czech Resistance and are planning to do anything to make sure he stays where he is. Ilsa approaches Rick, believing he has the letters of passage she and her husband need to leave, but Rick refuses her, not wanting to get involved in the politics. When Rick is resistant to Ilsa, she comes forth with the reason she left him stranded at the train in France so many years prior. She was married then to Victor but believed him to be dead in a Nazi prison camp.

Surprisingly, Rick forgives her for deserting him and they begin to reconcile their love. This is when Rick tells her he will help Victor, but leaves Ilsa to believe she will stay behind in Casablanca with him while Victor moves on.

Victor is arrested and Rick convinces the authorities to release him and explains to them that he and Ilsa will be leaving for America. However, Rick has a trick up his sleeve. Victor is on the plane and Rick convinces Ilsa to board the plane as well. He tells her she will regret staying with him. This scene is one of the most famous and most quoted in movie history.

Casablanca also boasts one of the most misquoted sayings in movie history. The quote many people get wrong is Rick saying Play It Again Sam. In fact, the first time Sam is asked to play As Time Goes By is by Ilsa when she comes into Rick’s cafe. She tells him, Play It Once, Sam, For Old Times’ Sake. When Sam feigns ignorance, she repeats, Play It, Sam, Play As Time Goes By. Later that night, Rick is shown telling Sam, You Played It For Her, You Can Play It For Me. If She Can Stand It, I Can! Play It!

In the 1980′s, a colorized version of Casablanca appeared on television, much to the dismay of viewers. In fact, only three million people watched the colorized version of the movie. This was Ted Turner’s idea and he took full credit for it, saying he did it because he wanted to. The colorized version of the movie was available briefly on video, but to purists, it was nothing but a shame to movies. Now, thankfully, you will rarely, if ever, see a colorized version of the movie, many stating that the color made the movie bland.
