Confidence And Perserverence Is The Key When Learning How To Read Crochet Patterns
Setting out to learn how to crochet is one thing, but for those starting out with crochet, learning how to read patterns can be very intimidating. For beginners, the best course of action is to stick with basic stitches like the single and double crochet. Stick with easy projects at the beginning to keep from getting frustrated. A wash cloth or scarf are good examples.
An easy cloth pattern would be as follows: Chain 25 stitches (or more if you want the cloth wider), single crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook, make a single crochet stitch in each chain across. At the end of the row, chain 1, turn your work and then you single crochet in each stitch across the row. At the end of the row chain 1, turn your work again and then single crochet in each stitch back across and continue until you have the cloth you want. This is about as easy as it gets and is a very good way for a beginner to get started.
If you prefer a scarf, this would be a good beginner project: Chain 20 (do more if you want it wider). Single crochet in the second chain away from the hook, then single crochet in every chain until you reach the end of the row, chain 2, turn your work, double crochet along the row and continue with these steps until you have a scarf that is as long as you would like. Rather than doing all double crochets, you can alternate your rows, one row using double crochet stitches and one row using single crochet stitches.
Granny squares probably makes sense for you to try after you master the single and double crochet stitches. Granny squares are one of the easiest patterns to learn. Once your granny square is mastered, you can practice changing colors in the granny square. It’s really not that hard. Just remember that it can take time to get proficient reading patterns. You have to have patience, and you may find it helpful to talk out the instruction, and read it a couple of times.
Try not to make the same mistake I made when I first started to learn how to read crochet patterns. Do not try to second-guess the pattern instructions. I would be following a pattern and then run into something that just didn’t seem right to me and I would read it over and over trying to figure it out. I’d get very frustrated during those periods and would tend to give up trying to learn for a while.
My determination kept me going and I would keep trying new patterns and still keep running into instructions that I thought were incorrect and expected my project to be ruined as a result. I would just do what the pattern said, even if I thought it sounded wrong and even though I thought it would be messed up! I bet I know what you are thinking! Much to my surprise, my projects would turn out just right!
Most important of all is enjoy yourself. Crochet and knitting are great ways to relieve stress, so once you master reading patterns and can create wonderful projects, you’ll be glad you invested the time to learn.
