Ninety percent of the world’s water comes from the ocean. Nearly three fourths of the earth’s surface is water. This movie goes where no other has gone before exploring deep beneath the surface of the sea. The movie is filled with never before seen images of animals, plants, and their behaviors.
The creation of this movie was not something that came easy to the crew. There were two years taken for planning out and preproduction. That was followed by four entire years of on location filming. Over seventy five excursions were made to all over the world, some places so remote they have never been seen before. Over four hundred and eighty hours of footage was recorded. It took the filmmakers nearly a year to whittle down all that footage and into feature film length.
This movie is intended to answer one innocent question. What is an ocean? The answer is a complex ecosystem that has so many facets that all intertwine in a fierce yet delicate way. The directors felt there was no better way to answer this than to take the audience on a thrilling adventure underwater where they can float above a coral reef, glide through the water amongst dolphins, and sit side by side with a walrus nursing her cub.
They also wanted to show a true depiction of the damage humans have inflicted on this resource. They have shown the devastating effects of certain selfish practices such as over-fishing, over-developing, and pollution. In order to appreciate water, they wanted people to realize that without it, human, plant, and animal life definitely can not be sustained.
The sea’s resiliency was also demonstrated in several scenes. It’s evident that there are marine creatures that are tenacious and will not give up without a struggle despite the human inflicted elements against them. It was reassuring to them to find these remote areas where life proved to be resilient and determined to survive.

The viewer can feel what it’s like to swim alongside dolphins and sharks, study the intricate coral reef, and play with the majestic and endangered polar bears. The high definition footage is bound to leave a lasting impression on all who see it.
