DIY Kitchen Makeover – Easy Islands
Almost every kitchen could use an Island, and a bit more storage. Here are three examples or ideas of salvaged and re-worked items to inspire you in your Do It Yourself Kitchen makeover adventure!
Metal Wash Bin Makeover:
First up, Yee Old Wash bin. You can pick up an decent sized metal wash bin at a garage sale, on ebay, from a thrift store or snag one from Grandma’s backyard, she won’t notice. ha ha, poor granny! Once you get it home and cleaned up or painted, you can mount this puppy on painted metal legs to match the wash bin or maybe a repurposing of old table legs or staircase spindles is in order. A cut to size wooden top will give you additional countertop workspace in the kitchen. (always a good thing!!) Fasten a large drawer pull to the side of the wash tub to use as a towel rack, you can never go wrong with an additional hand towel or two. Vintage (aka “old”) Cooler Makeover:
The warm weather may have you thinking of barbeques, slip and slides, hotdogs and coolers. Seeing coolers and some remakes of Vintage coolers, in bright colors to catch your eye has got me thinking it would be pretty easy to complete this vintage cooler kitchen island project.
Maybe your “found item” isn’t a cool vintage CocaCola cooler, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be red and shiny.
If needed give it a quick once over with some sand paper to scratch up the surface. Then gloss it over with a thin and even coat of Tremclad paint let dry and give it another coat or two until it has nice even color.
Make yourself a Handy dandy bottom shelf, good for storing your “super posh” water… or cases of Kraft dinner… its really your choice.
Shopping Cart/Trolley to Kitchen Island Makeover Extravanganza:
One of the first shopping carts was introduced on June 4, 1937, it was the invention of Sylvan Goldman, (owner of the piggly wiggly). Much different than todays models it was simply a wooden folding chair with a basket on the seat and wheels on the legs. Shopping carts have come a long way since 1937, and now another step forward! The “it used to be a shopping cart” kitchen island.
After a long, long life of endless trips across cold parking lots carting around other peoples groceries, children and worldly possessions, a shopping cart deserves a nice cushy kitchen job. Storage under the butchers block and on the bottom shelf will come in super handy, and a few “S” hooks through the metal grate makes for even more storage. You’ll be so happy with this shopping cart to kitchen island transformation you won’t even notice the bummed front wheel anymore!
