Having very encouraging parents at the age of eight, my father and mother told me that I could become a scientist one day when I told them I wanted a microscope. I had my first microscope that Christmas. I was so engrossed with what I saw that it had me thinking what if I could discover a new organism, or a cure for a disease or one that could contribute to the betterment of human life, then maybe I could become a Noble Peace Prize winner.

I looked at everything I could get my hands on under that little microscope. The snowfall during that time was unlike the usual. It made such exquisite snowflakes in all its variety. I adored it. Delicately molded tiny crafts of art, each is a wonderful present created with its own distinction.

It was the invention of glass lenses, or a combination of lenses with the use of a light microscope that enables to magnify these little worlds and make them visible to the human eye. According to the scriptures of Seneca, Pliny the Elder, and the Roman philosophers that magnifiers, burning glasses (it burned the item below it as it is exposed against the sunlight) and magnifying glasses were already used during 100 A.D. Formed like a lentil seed, these parts of magnifying glasses were termed as lenses.

The original microscope was made up of a small pipe with a lens attached to an end and a plate on the other end. The lens amplifies ten times the size of the object that is placed on the plate. Because they were so fond of watching fleas and other insects in it, they also termed the lenses as flea glasses.

Zaccharias Janssen and his son Hans conducted a study in 1590 on the levels of amplification with the use of numerous lenses in a tube. They found out that the object’s image can be blown up. In the years that succeeded, the device continues to upgrade as more scientists pitch in what they’ve learned and applied. A scientist named Galileo imparted his knowledge by introducing a lens with a device that directly focuses on the specimen in 1609. Nevertheless, Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch scientist, is known to have introduced microscopy.He started as an apprentice in a dry goods store and used a magnifying glass to count the threads in cloth. He became skillful with the lenses and curved ones that can amplify objects up to 270 diameters.He began to build microscopes and eventually made biological discoveries that made him famous. He is the first to record microscopic observations of bacteria, yeast plants, organisms in water and blood flow in capillaries. To have done that was a very great accomplishment. It was not until the 19th century that a great enhancement to the magnifying device was made. It had the best lenses ever created with its magnification increased to 1250 diameters with natural light and 5000 diameters with blue light. This invention is credited to an American scientist and manufacturer by the name of Charles A. Spencer.
