How To Make Your Home Festive For Christmas On A Dime

Despite all of the hype which suggests that you should spend tons of money on decorations and such this Holiday Season, there is no need to do so. Pioneer families once made all of their Christmas decorations for themselves. They used items which were available on hand, mostly from nature. Using a Victorian theme, this is still a beautiful, and inexpensive way to decorate for the holidays.

Often, Christmas cards are used as a simple and pretty touch. An elegant touch is added when these cards are set out in the house. As people mail you more of these, you can set them out as well, decorating for free. At the end of the Holiday Season, store these with your usual Christmas decor.

In order to make “Cookie Cutter Ornaments”, you will need to mix flour and water. Keep stirring the mixture and adding flour until it is thickened. Create hangings for your tree by using cookie cutters to form the dough. These will now be baked just as you would cookies, and allowed to sit. Using model car paint, dress up these cookies as you like. These can be hung where ever you’d like by ribbon strung through it.

It is also quite easy to create home made garland. Adding cranberries in place of, or with the old standby, popcorn, can bring in some color. Any child who is old enough to handle a needle and thread can plan this project also. Kids also like to use paper strips to form rings which are chained together. A bright and happy garland can be made from these chains.

Even items which may seem like garbage have potential as Christmas decor. One such item is the boughs cut from the underside of the tree. Setting these around in the home adds a nice touch. Near the Christmas cards you placed before is a good place for the boughs. Add a touch of color with candles or berries.

You can also form a wreath with items found outside. Gather a good bunch of vines to start with. Vines found in the woods are great, just be sure they are thorn-less. Using just a piece at a time, twist the vines around to make a circle the size of the wreath. To make the wreath thicker, simply twist in more vines. Using more pieces of the tree, or berries and such, the wreath can be decorated.

There are many other ways to decorate for little or no cost. Just by using your imagination, and avoiding waste, your home can smell and look terrific for Christmas. Adding a few sprinkles of scented coffee, such as cinnamon hazelnut to some of your decorations will add a wonderful and warm scent to your home. A crackling fire in the fireplace, and it is sure to be a picture-book Christmas.
