Painting Old Furniture Pieces
Furniture is not cheap, particularly quality pieces of furniture. So if you are making an attempt to redecorate a room rather than purchasing all new furniture, one choice you have is painting your old furniture. So long as you know what you are doing, painting your old furniture is easy, but you can’t rush the method if you want it done correctly.
When painting furniture the very first thing that you need to do is sand the whole piece of furniture. With this in mind it is important to note that only wood can be painted. Particleboard or something else that is fragile cannot be and so painting it can be difficult. Once you have sanded the entire piece of furniture you will need to use a damp cloth to remove all the dust left behind from sanding.
After sanding the furniture it’ll need to be painted. Before you can paint the furniture you’ll need to choose the best color for the furniture. If you’re painting bedroom furniture you must select a color that compliments the bedspread or perhaps the walls. If you do not wish to use colors on bedroom furniture you can always stain the furniture a natural color after sanding it.
Once the furniture has been painted a clear coat of polyurethane will have to be applied to the furniture. In reality the furniture will need several coats of polyurethane because that will be what protects it from damage. Living room furniture, which is put to more use than other furniture should receive more coats than other furniture. When applying the polyurethane you will need to make certain you are going with the natural grain of the furniture for the best results. You will also must allow each coat to dry before applying the following coat.
Painting furniture is a great way to bring old furniture back to life. It is also a way to form a new look for your place while staying inside a budget. However, painting furniture will only work if you have high quality furniture to start with.
