Synopsis Of The New Hit Movie Watchmen

The Watchmen was released at the height of the superhero genre, around the same time as Iron Man and The Dark Knight. The interesting thing about the film is that it really couldn’t work quite as well as it does if it weren’t for the fact that superhero flicks have been such a major piece of the cinematic landscape for the last few years. In fact, part of the point of the film is that many of us are just tired of these tights and capes epics. Next time you want to watch movies online, give it a viewing.

The movie was based on the Alan Moore comic book, which was intended by the author to essentially serve as the apocalyptic ending of the superhero genre, just as the Sex Pistols were to serve as the end of Rock and Roll. The result was not the death of the superhero genre but the rebirth, both in comics and in the film adaptation. It works as commentary and a much needed reinvigoration.

Many of the comic’s readers were actually against the adaptation, considering it impossible to turn into a comic book. Zack Snyder really surprised many of them, though, taking a story that was very comic book focused and turning it into a story focused on the concept of superheroes in film. The end result is without a doubt one of the most interesting superhero flicks ever made.

The interesting thing about these heroes is that they’re not purely heroes. They’re incredibly morally complex, and none of them always do the right thing. The Comedian is barely a hero at all, but rather, something of a sociopath who’s been reined in by the government and used for the power of good, more or less. Rorschach is the purest of the heroes, very moralistic, but also suffering something of an addiction to violence.

The story has just as many layers of complexity as its characters, and after the ending, you’ll find yourself wondering if Ozymandias was really in the right with his plans to save the world. Alan Moore has, thus far, refused to so much as even see the film, but it actually did wind up as a worthwhile adaptation, and simply good storytelling.

Zack Snyder is really on a roll these days, taking big, commercial projects and making them personal. His Dawn of the Dead remake actually took the story in a whole new direction, knowing that he couldn’t top the original for scares, he decided to make an action film out of the same basic premise. 300, based on Frank Miller’s comic book, stayed true to the original story while also doing some things with it that you can only do in film, and The Watchmen, while being Moore’s story through and through, couldn’t be what it is without Snyder’s influence on the film.

It’s rare for such big budget films to feel so human and personal, but Snyder is one of those rare directors, like Sam Raimi, who can actually make it work. The independent spirit is, in a way, actually completely alive in Snyder’s work.

Watchmen is definitely one to watch, especially if you’re just plain sick and tired of the tights and capes genre, because the film works as such a commentary on these stories that it will satisfy those who love’em and those who are getting bored of them.
