People who have attempted to read The Lord Of The Rings The Two Towers often find that it is not an easy book to get through. And yet, the movie version, released in 2002 and direct by Peter Jackson is an exciting and memorable movie that has received a lot of critical acclaim. Here are a few reasons why the movie is often more appealing than the book.

You will find that the book tends to be a study in contrasts. There are some portions that are filled with action, suspense and intrigue. There are also sections which focus more on the environment that the characters are traveling through and which tend to be a bit slower paced.

Because the movie tends to simply allow the terrain to speak for itself, much of the focus is suddenly on character development, dialogue and actual action. The two towers mentioned in the title refer to the tower of Saruman, a corrupt wizard who has fallen under Sauron’s sway, and the tower of Sauron itself in Mordor. Saruman is busy creating warriors that will be used to crush the remaining forces who are still putting up a fight against Sauron. Saruman is creating fearsome creatures known as Uruk-hai that are stronger, tougher and more brutal than anything that has come before.

The Fellowship was broken at the end of the first movie due to the attempted theft of the Ring from Frodo by Boromir. The movie is split into two different sub-plots. The first is the travels of Frodo and his companion Sam and the second is the travels of the remainder of the Fellowship. The companions are further separated due to events which occur during the book, and this gives us the opportunity to be introduced to many of the different cultures and races in Middle Earth.

You also begin to learn more about some of the motivations which affect the characters. Boromir, who is killed in the first movie, is from Gondor, a land on the border of Mordor and under constant siege from the forces of darkness. The movie delves into the motivations of the people of Gondor. We are introduced to Faramir, younger brother of Boromir who is desperate to prove himself to his father who serves as Steward of that country.

There are many fantastic scenes in this movie such as the Battle of Helm’s Deep. This battle takes place when the humans of Rohan take shelter in a stronghold which then comes under siege. An overwhelming force attacks them and it is only the arrival of elven warriors which allows the humans to survive. That in itself is miraculous as we learn that no elf has fought with a human since they last battled Sauron a thousand years earlier.

If you are someone who tried to read the book and were unable to get through it, you need to see this movie. The special effects, scenery and pacing are excellent and make it definitely worth watching.
