V-Hull Vs Multi-Hulls in RC Boat

Deciding on an RC boat hull design requires that you take several things into consideration. First consider what type of area you will use the radio controlled boat in. This will make some determinations for you, as we will later discuss.

One of the most important is hull configuration. Of course you have the option of choosing either an electric rc boat or a gas powered rc boat. But the hull design affects the boats stability and speed no matter what the power source. There are several possible options and lets take a moment and look into them.

Hydroplane or Catamaran Hull Designs- Hydroplane and catamaran configurations place two or three hull surfaces in contact with the water. Two things result from this type of configuration the first being less surface area is in contact with the water and the second is that air is trapped under the hull. What is produced by this trapped air is called “lift”. This will reduce the friction between the radio controlled boat and the water thereby increasing the speed of the boat.

Catamaran and hydroplane hull configurations are usually responsible for the fastest RC boats. The draw back to this hull designs is stability in rough or choppy water. If the water is choppy high speeds are usually not attained. However, if it is calm the sky is the limit for these RC boats.

Mono Hull Design – With this hull configuration there is a single surface that is always in contact with the waters surface. Often referred to as a “V-Hull”, the mono hull provides better stability for radio controlled boats in choppy water.

This type is further broken up into two categories, the “Deep-V” and the “Shallow’V”. For remote control the most popular design is the Deep-V but the Shallow-V is a close second. The Shallow-V has less surface area in contact with the water when the boat is under power and consequently can go faster. Once again the draw back is that if the surface conditions are choppy the Deep-V is more stable and can outperform a Shallow-V hulled remote control boat.

Buying a RC boat will result in you having to some compromises. If it is calm where you operate your radio controlled boat you may enjoy having a catamaran or hydroplane type and the increased performance that is available from this hull type. For those that operate their boats in a rough environment the recommendation is to get a Deep-V design hull.

When racing RC boats they are always broken down by hull design due to performance differences. So, no matter what style of boat you get you will be able to both have a great time and compete against other radio controlled boat enthusiasts .
