This is the one that really made Steve Martin a star. Sure, he had his day being a comedian, but when you think of Martin, you think of his films before anything, and the Jerk was the one that made him a household name, and something of an institution on the cinematic landscape, which is why it belongs on any list of must see comedy movie downloads.

Martin wrote and stars as Navin R. Johnson, a “poor black child” from the south. He’s never quite been able to fully appreciate the blues music his family is into, and one night, he hears what amounts to elevator music on the radio… His feet start tapping, it’s white people music! He has to go out there and find his place in the world. From there, it’s a rags to riches to rags and back again story that essentially serves as little more than a clothesline for Martin and the director, Carl Reiner, to hang some ridiculous scenes of comic excess.

Johnson is one of the all time great comic heroes. Simple, mundane situations are elevated by Johnson’s weird perception. It’s a classic staple of comedy that the hero misunderstands what happens to them, but Johnson just… Really doesn’t get it. There’s no situation simple enough for him to understand, and he always gets the wrong idea. Formulaic? Sure, but also wildly funny.

Bernadette Peters shows up as Johnson’s girlfriend, and she is incredible. She can get just as zany as Martin, but she can also reel it in and play straight to his wild and crazy guy when the need arises. As a bonus, you won’t be able to take your eyes off her. She’s one of the most beautiful comediennes of all time.

Every scene is a classic. The “I don’t need anything but this!” sequence is the most famous, but only a drop in the ocean alongside the gas station shootout, the cat juggling scene, and the courtroom presentation by “Celebrity Carl Reiner”, with the film’s director playing himself in one of the all time funniest film cameos.

Martin’s follow up films, The Man With Two Brains and Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid… They had their moments, they’re worth watching, but they never really achieved the consistent, beginning-to-end hilarity of The Jerk.

Martin went on to make a few more comedies right away, The Man With Two Brains and Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. Both are funny, they’re both considered cult classics, but The Jerk is definitely the better of the trilogy, and the one Martin may be remembered for.

Today, Martin has gone on to have a prolific career as a comedy star, as a “real” actor, as a writer, as a musician, he even wrote Traitor, the taut, political thriller starring Don Cheadle and focusing on issues of loyalty and honor. He does everything, but The Jerk may well be the one he goes down in film history for. At the very least, it will put you in stitches, and that’s why it’s one of the all time classic must see comedy movie downloads.
